So, What Does an Event Planner Career Look Like?

Your career will likely begin as an entry-level coordinator with either a meeting, catering, or convention department of a hotel or resort. You may also work for a Destination Management Company, which are major operations that provide full design and logistics services for Fortune 500 companies. You may also work as a coordinator for country clubs, private dining in restaurants, or vendors (companies that provide products and services to planners).

Your career can focus on different expertise areas, such as marketing and sales, where you meet with clients initially with design proposals and packages. You may also focus on the production portion of events, where you are on-site making sure that logistics are running smoothly, such as overseeing tradeshow booth installs, or signing off on room blocks. If you enjoy food and beverage, you can work in catering. Lastly, you can work for boutique event producer companies or start your own business. Either way, your career will grow as you gain experience, as will your benefits, compensation, and stature.

This is an exciting career you can pursue nationally and internationally, wherever life takes you.

You Have Questions. We Have Answers.

Is an event planning career worth it?

Yes! This can be an exceptionally rewarding career. Regarding compensation, besides salary and benefits, wedding planners may also earn commissions. In a corporate environment, career advancement opportunities are plentiful, leading to higher compensation.

Does the training take a long time?

No, you can learn all the essential skills necessary to get hired in just three months with a certificate. We also have an 11-month diploma option that adds business and management courses.

Do I have to come to Las Vegas, or can I take classes online?

We offer classroom learning in Las Vegas or an interactive online format lead by a personal industry instructor. Online students can also add an externship course (held in Las Vegas or their home city) where they can go behind-the-scenes and work with real event planners.

Why should I not consider online schools with lower tuition?

The short answer is because most of these online-only schools are not actual schools, but rather, an office with programmers. TISOH is an 18-year-old accredited institution with thousands of alums worldwide. We have a brick-and-mortar campus with real industry faculty. Most of all, we are respected by employers and offer career support and placement. When you earn a credential from TISOH, you know that we will be here for years to come to help your career grow.

I have no experience. Do I qualify for training?

Yes! TISOH programs are designed with the career changer and adult learner in mind. If it has been a while since you have been to school, not to worry. We offer complimentary workshops on software, presentation, and test-taking skills. If you need more help, we also offer free tutoring one-on-one. The only educational requirement is a high-school diploma, equivalency, or higher.

I like to learn skills on my own DIY style. Why do I need TISOH?

Real technical skills cannot easily be learned from a book. Our curriculums cover complex jargon, trends, and essential industry practices. Our instructors work in the industry so they can share real-world scenarios and examples, while teaching intangibles, and skills you can apply right away. Remember that you only have one chance to make a good first impression. Our training ensures that you don’t put a foot wrong and hit the ground running as a respected, new member to the industry.

I’m already in the industry. Are your programs of use to me?

Our certificates would be of most benefit to current industry pros. They can help solidify your base of competency, plug any knowledge gaps, and provide a valuable credential to add to your profile. Further, our curriculums cover content that will be on certification exams, such as the CMP, CPCE, or CSEP. Lastly, you can also earn continuing education units. In the end, our programs can help you gain notice from a superior, showing initiative to advance, and perhaps start a conversation towards a promotion or pay rise.

Do you offer any promotions or tuition assistance?

Yes. For hospitality professionals, we offer 10% tuition savings. Additionally, we have two types of payment plans. Installments is a pay-as-you-go option that is the duration of the program. We charge a deposit and then equal monthly installments with no interest.

Financing can be up to 32 months, after the initial deposit, the monthly payments are very affordable, but a 15% interest is assessed. To learn more, visit the programs page.

OK, I want to become an event planner. How do I get started?

First, view the learning options. Second, reach out to us by phone or text 702.947.7210.  You can also email us: mlam@tisoh.edu or cngo@tisoh.edu  Come for a campus visit either in-person or virtually.  We are open Monday to Thursday from 9 am to 7 pm.

What if I start my program and find out it’s just not for me?

No worries. You can withdraw and only pay tuition for the class sessions (or online modules) you attended. As an accredited school, there are many built-in protections for students. We want to make sure you have a good experience. Learn more about our policies.

Which format is best for me: classroom or online?

Classroom format in Las Vegas is the most hands-on way to learn. However, you will need to be able to attend evening classes twice a week in person. Online format is ideal for those who want maximum flexibility and prefer a more individualized approach. Online students will have direct access to an industry instructor and facilitator, which allow for mentorship dynamics to blossom.

Since the pandemic restart, we are offering some hybrid optional elements to online students who are local (in Las Vegas). These include regular in-person meet ups with their instructor, site visits, and behind-the-scenes industry tours. For online students not in Vegas, we offer these elements remotely through Zoom.

What is the difference between a certificate and a diploma?

The Conference Management and Event Planning (CMEP) certificate is a 3-month program that teaches essential skills for event planners. This is ideal for students who want a single, fast, and comprehensive course that will teach them everything they need to know to start an event planning career.

The Diploma in Hospitality Operations (DHO) is an 11-month program that includes CMEP but adds (5) additional courses and an externship. This is ideal for students who want to learn more than just technical event planning skills, such as business management, communication, marketing + sales, a hospitality industry primer, and an event planning advanced-level course. The Diploma also includes the Hospitality Externship (HEX) course.

What is the Hospitality Externship Add-On (HEX) course?

Students enrolled in the Conference Management and Event Planning (CMEP) certificate are eligible to add the externship course, which is taken concurrently with their program. All Diploma in Hospitality Operations (DHO) students will take the externship course as part of their program. The Hospitality Externship Add-On (HEX) course is a curated 45-hour shadowing and work experience with our TISOH-affiliated corporate partners. Students will work with event managers in different environments with different types of companies so they can see how operations are performed daily. Students can perform these externships in Las Vegas, or their home city and they will be arranged by the school on a custom basis with each student. This is a valuable learning experience only made possible by the school’s exclusive industry connections.

Bottom line, what is the real benefit of coming to TISOH?

By far, it is the support network you will gain as a graduate. We will be here for you, so you never have to go it alone again. Career placement assistance is only the beginning. As your career grows, we continue to involve you by inviting you to industry events and webinars. We support you directly by helping make our connections eventually yours as well. In the future, your career might place you in a new city where you find yourself alone. Not with TISOH. We will help you get started all over again by using our community resources to help. In this respect, we are quite unique as a school in that we truly care.

All our administrators and faculty are involved heavily in the industry, and we try to get to know every student who comes through our door, whether in person or virtually. We engage so we can get to know you as a person, and eventually, hopefully, a colleague and friend. Visit TISOHnext.com to see how we deliver on this commitment to alumni support.
